Although most affected never actually see a doctor for hyperhydrosis treatment - it is good to know what causes the excessive sweating so you can address the original causes of the problem of hyperhidrosis.

Caused of profuse sweating

Hyperhydrosis, or excessive sweating, can be caused by sweat from stress or anxiety. Our body is programmed to prepare itself for physical defense in situations of stress and will then stimulate sweaty palms (hands) and feet or even excessive facial sweating.

Hyperhydrosis (hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating or perspiration) can also be caused by endocrine diseases:

  • Adrenal disorders like Addison's disease, Conn's syndrome, Cushings syndrome, hypoadrenalism or pheochromocytoma
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Female menopause, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and Turners syndrome
  • Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus
  • Hypercalcaemic nephropathy
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia II (MEN II) - also called Sipple's syndrome
  • Renal Tubular Acidosis (RTA)
  • Hyperparathyroidism

Anxiety and nervous disorders are also known to cause cases of excessive perspiration or hyperhydrosis. Obesity can be the underlying cause behind profuse sweating and excessive armpit perspiration as well.

Night sweats (hyperhydrosis) is most often caused by the female menopause but men can also suffer from night sweats and the most common cause there is the male menopause, the andropause.

Sleep apnia (apnea) can also result in night sweats, sometimes severe enough to be classified as hyperhydrosis.

There are also drugs with excessive perspiration as a side effect. One example is Accutane, a medication used to treat recalcitrant acne. Some of its side effects are hyperhydrosis-like excessive perspiration or flushing in some patients.

Another drug with the known side effect of profuse sweating (hyperhydrosis) is haloperidol, used to treat certain psychosis conditions.

Excessive sweating can also be attributed to:

  • Congenital factors
  • Hyperglycemia
  • Drugs (cocaine etc)
  • Rheumatory Arthitis
  • Migraine headache
  • Acromegaly
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Heart conditions (stroke etc)
  • Lung conditions (emphysema etc)
  • Parkinsons disease
