Hyperhydrosis explained

Hyperhydrosis, or hyperhidrosis as it is also spelled, what is the reason it develops in some patients?

The reason our body needs to keep temperature constant is that our brain is very sensitive to high temperatures. The brain consumes a very high proportion of our metabolic energy, around 20% and in doing so, it produces a lot of heat. This is cooled down by the blood which in turn is cooled down near the surface of the skin where sweating take place to keep the surface cool.

Profuse sweating (hyperhidrosis) is when sweating goes out of control and is used beyond what is necessary for normal cooling operations. Medical science has no explanation - secondary hyperhidrosis is when the excessive sweating disorder is caused by some other disease and this is better researched.

Most armpit perspiration is actually odorless. It is mainly when your sweat comes in contact with bacteria on your skin that unpleasant smells will develop. It is usually not a problem and we are all used to covering up with deodorants and having a shower to remove the problem. With 5 million sweat glands though, most of them in your hands, it is not difficult to imagine what will happen if the system looses control - overactive sweat glands or hyperhydrosis (profuse excessive sweating disorder).

The sweat glands produce a very weak solution of lactic acid and urea. One of the cures of the hyperhydrosis is to plug the "holes" by using a special prescription deodorant which not only covers up the smell (like normal deodorants) but also actively stops perspiration in the treated area.

Other cures of hyperhydrosis (hyperhidrosis) are botox injections, surgery or the use of low power electrical current to stimulate the affected area.
